Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site Lesson Plan

OBJECTIVES

- to learn about the Capt. Bob Bartlett
- to read for information
- to compare two encyclopedia articles
- locate places on a map of the world

1. INTRODUCTION

Ask the class if anyone has heard of Captain Bob Bartlett. Allow time for responses and sharing of information. Depending on how much information you wish to present to the class, the teacher may briefly relate more information about Capt. Bob Bartlett. Or, the teacher may wish to have students read two brief encyclopedia articles about Capt. Bob Bartlett and have students answer the above question again.

2. READING FOR INFORMATION

This activity may be completed individually, in groups or as a home assignment.
Distribute copies of the articles taken from The Canadian Encyclopedia and The Junior Encyclopedia of Canada. Allow time for students to read the article.
While students are reading the brief articles, distribute copies of the activity sheet. When students have finished reading the articles, they may complete the activity sheet. If necessary, go over the directions for completing the activity.
It is suggested that students correct their own activity sheets.

3. REVIEW

Ask the class if they can recall information about Captain Bob Bartlett after reading the articles and completing the activity sheet. Briefly discuss whether or not Captain Bob Bartlett is an important person in Newfoundland and Canadian history.

4. MAP SKILLS

Using an atlas and a map of the world, have students locate

-Brigus
-Wrangle Island
-the North Pole
-Siberia
-New York City
-Alaska

Provide each student with a blank map of the world. Have them locate each of the places listed above.

5. FIELD TRIP

Visit Hawthorne Cottage, Brigus, to learn more about Capt. Bob Bartlett

Captain Bob Bartlett

Bartlett, Robert Abram (born at Brigus, Nfld.; Aug. 15, 1875: died at New York City April 28; 1946)

A sealer and merchant seamen from his youth, Bartlett began his Arctic career in 1898 joining the first of Perry's three attempts to reach the North Pole. On Peary's last attempt in 1908-1909, Bartlett commanded the Karluk, supply ship of the Canadian Arctic Expedition lead by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. The ship was wrecked near Wangle Island north of Siberia and Bartlett made a daring sled trip across the ice to Alaska to seek help. Later he commanded the Effie M. Morrissey on scientific voyages to the Arctic over 20 years.

Arctic explorer(born in 1875 at Brigus, Nfld.; died in 1946 at New York City , U.S.) A fisherman and seal hunter from his youth, Robert Bartlett learned to navigate ships through the ice around his native Newfoundland. He impressed American Robert Perry with his skills and Perry invited him along on three expeditions to the North Pole. On the final attempt, Bartlett himself got to within 250 km of the pole.
In 1913, Bartlett took command of the Karluk, the supply vessel for the Canadian Arctic Expedition. The ship was wrecked in ice north of the Russian mainland. Bartlett made a daring sled trip to Siberia and then traveled by ship to Alaska to get help.
After World I, he commanded a vessel which carried scientists and supplies into the Arctic.
