Town of Brigus
Nestled in the centre
of the charming town of Brigus, Hawthorne Cottage offers a glimpse at the
family life of Captain A. Bartlett, famous arctic explorer. "Captain
Bob's" many scientific voyages between 1908 and 1946 made him Canada's
most significant adventurer in the history of arctic exploration. He is most
famous as captain of the Roosevelt for Peary's famous "dash for the pole"
in 1909, a 700 mile trek across Arctic ice to save the crew of the Karluk
in 1913, and 27 scientific voyages between 1926-46.
Although he sailed out of New York, Captain Bob always considered Brigus his home. Every summer he stopped at Hawthorne Cottage to visit his mother and sisters, and also to engage his crew, on the way to Arctic waters.
The cottage has national historic significance in its own right. Built in the 1930's, it is one of the few remaining intact examples of the "picturesque" cottage.
Hawthorne Cottage is operated by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland
and Labrador
