OBJECTIVES
- to locate Winterton on a map of Newfoundland
- to come up with reasons why boat building became important in Winterton
- reading for information
- locate definitions in a dictionary
The following activities may be completed individually, in small groups, or in a class group.
1. INTRODUCTION
Ask the class if anyone has heard of the town of Winterton. Allow time for responses. Using a map of Newfoundland, show the location of the Town of Winterton.
2. DISCUSSION
Ask: Why would boat building become important in a community such as Winterton?
(It is a coastal community.)
Ask: What materials would you need to build a boat? (wood, nails, etc.)
Ask: Where would people in Winterton get these materials to build boats? (From
the forest, buy them, etc.)
3. READING FOR INFORMATION
Have students complete the activity sheets. Depending on the time available,
the teacher will have to decide whether all students complete all activity
sheets. The activity sheets may also be placed in a Learning Center.
To complete the activity sheets, students will need a copy of the article
Shipbuilding from The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador. If the CD
of the Encyclopedia is used, students may be able to reference it - possibly
in a computer lab.
