The Victoria Lions Club
Dog Guide Project

As a volunteer group, the Victoria Lions Club is always looking for ways to assist the community.

Each year Lions Clubs across the country support the training of dog guides for the visually, hearing and medically impaired through the Lions Foundation of Canada. (Click here for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.)

In 2004-2005 the Victoria Lions Club is proud to be working with Victoria Community Development Corporation to sell a limited edition wall calendar for 2005. In May 2004, Lions Clubs across Canada will begin selling the calendars to support the training of dog guides.

Don Inniss, secretary of the VCDC, said that the idea to develop the calendar came about after the visit of a dog guide owner and her dog guide to the Victoria Lions Club. The members of the Lions Club realized the positive impact dog guides can have on the quality of life of their owners and families. The guide dogs offer owners the freedom to do things such as go to school, and work or shop with friends.

The Victoria Lions Club Calendar

The N.J. Downey Photography and Custom Framing Gallery has given permission to use nine of their prints which will include works by Ian Sparkes (who is well know for his paintings of Harbour Grace) and five other artists. Local artist Peter Sampson of Carbonear has also donated the use of three of his prints. The calendar will be 11" wide by 17" high. (See illustration of the January 2005 sample page at right.)

Once all the calendars are sold, a drawings will be held, and one lucky person will win a free air trip to the province for two during 2005 sponsored by CanJet. In addition, for each 100 calendars a Lions Club buys, its name will be entered for a draw of five nights accommodations in NL during 2005. (Click here for further information.)
