1. MAP SKILLS

Locate Harbour Grace on a map of Newfoundland. Students correctly place Harbour Grace on a blank map of Newfoundland.

2. BRAINSTORMING

Display the quotation from John Guy's journal on an overhead.

On October 7, 1612, John Guy wrote the following entry in his journal.

"This night by sailing and rowing we came to Havre de Grace as far in as the Pirate's Fort...where we remained until the 17th of October."

Ask: What do you think he meant by "pirate's fort?" Allow time for responses.
Ask: What would pirates be doing in Harbour Grace? Allow time for responses.

3. MAP SKILLS

Distribute blank maps of Harbour Grace. Instruct each group to choose a location for the pirate's fort. Show the fort on the map. Students should be able to explain why they chose that particular location for the location of their fort.
Ask each group to check their sheets from the Encyclopedia for the exact location of the pirate's fort.

4. ART / DRAWING

Give each student a blank sheet of drawing paper. Instruct them to draw an illustration of a pirate's fort.

OR

If time permits, or as a home activity, have students make a 3-dimensional model of a pirate fort.

5. INTERVIEWING / ROLE PLAY

Divide the class into groups of two. One person role plays a newspaper or TV reporter; the other person role plays a pirate. The reporter asks the pirate 5 questions, and the pirate answers the questions. Questions and answers may be written and displayed in the class.

6. ART / CREATIVE WRITING

Display a picture of a galleon so that students can get the concept of what a pirate ship might have looked like. Have students draw their own version of a galleon . Students may also write a story about a pirate to accompany the picture.

7. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH

Assign students a project to research galleons. Present their findings to the class.

8. FIELD TRIP
