CARBONEAR SHIPS
OBJECTIVES
- alphabetical order
- mapping skills
- graphing
- problem solving
1. INTRODUCTION
This activity may be completed individually or in small groups.
Give each student a copy of the list of ships. Allow time for students to
examine the list. Ask: What do you notice about the names of most of the ships?
(They are named after people). Ask: Why do you think most of the ships are
named after people? Allow time for responses.
(The most likely answer is that the ships' owners named their vessels after
members of their families).
2. ALPHABETICAL ORDER
Instruct students to put the list of ships' names in alphabetical order.
Allow time for review.
To modify this activity, assign each group a certain number of ships' names
to put in alphabetical order. For example students may only put 10 names in
alphabetical order; or only 15 names in alphabetical order. The teacher can
decide how to complete the activity depending on the amount of time available
and the skill level of the students.
3. GRAPHING
Depending on the skill level of the students, the teacher will have to decide
on how to proceed with the graphing activity.
Distribute copies of the list showing the tonnage of several of the Carbonear
ships or show the list on an overhead. Instruct students to make a bar graph
show the tonnage of each ship. If available, students may use a spreadsheet
or other graphing software to complete this activity.
4. MAPPING SKILLS
Distribute the list of places ships from Carbonear visited. Using an atlas, map of the world, etc., have the students locate the places listed, and correctly show them on a blank map of the world.
5. DISCUSSION
Ask students what the ships carried from Carbonear and Newfoundland to other parts of the world, and what the ships brought back to Carbonear and Newfoundland from other parts of the world.
6. FIELD TRIP
Visit the Carbonear Railway Station to find out more about foreign- going vessels.
