The Newfoundland Pony
The Newfoundland Pony has long been a proud and integral part of Newfoundland culture and history. It was for centuries the main beast of burden that toiled for our foreparents. It helped in helping Newfoundlanders wrestle a living from a harsh but beautiful land.

Early settlers brought with them from the British Isles Exmoor, Dartmoor, New Forest,Galloway, Welsh, Connemara, and the odd Highlands Pony. With very little new blood being introduced from outside Newfoundland thes ponies over more than 3 centuries interbred until one common pony emerged, the Newfoundland Pony.

These hard working and loyal ponies hauled firewood, timber, kelp, rocks amongst other things. They transported their owners by back, cart and wagonin times before the car. They were an integral part of the Newfoundland way of life right up to the late 1950's and beyond.
